Noise and the neurodivergent brain

Why sound control is a focus tool, not a luxury, and how to choose between over-ear, earbuds and earplugs.

For a lot of neurodivergent people, sound isn’t background, it’s foreground, all the time. Controlling it is one of the highest-leverage changes you can make.

Three tools, three jobs

  • Over-ear noise-cancelling, deep focus blocks, working from a noisy room.
  • Focus earbuds, portable, discreet, good for commutes.
  • Filter earplugs (e.g. Loop), take the edge off without sealing you out. Big in the autistic community for exactly this reason.

How we score them

We look at comfort over long sessions, how fiddly setup is (onboarding difficulty matters when your working memory is busy), and sensory feel, clamp pressure, ear fatigue, that faint “pressure” some ANC creates.
